Candy: Lover of Treats and Being Adored From Afar.
After living a life outdoors, she learned the only thing she was comfortable with regarding humans was them filling up her food bowl. She is…
Some of the cats at Help Humane come from backgrounds where they had little or no positive interaction with people. These cats are not bad or unloving. They simply need time, patience, and understanding to feel safe around humans.
Undersocialized cats may be fearful, hide often, avoid touch, or react defensively when overwhelmed. These behaviors are rooted in fear, not aggression. Trust takes time and must develop on the cat’s terms.
Creating a calm, predictable environment is one of the most helpful things you can do. Quiet spaces, consistent routines, and reduced stress allow these cats to begin feeling secure. Let them come to you when they are ready. Even small steps, like choosing to stay in the same room, accepting treats nearby, or watching from a distance, are meaningful signs of progress.
Many undersocialized cats also enjoy the company of other cats and feel more confident with feline companionship. Some may always prefer limited physical contact, but that does not mean they cannot live full and happy lives. With the right care, they can thrive.
Choosing to foster or adopt one of these cats is an act of compassion. While the process may move more slowly, the reward of earning their trust can be incredibly meaningful.
Some of our long-term residents who are still learning to trust include Gibson, Candy, Cider, Jr, Atlas, Jane, and Nolan. Each of them is capable of forming a strong bond with someone who is willing to take the time to learn their individual needs and show them they are safe.
